Archon’s Decay is a demo for 70’s fantasy-inspired text-based RPG set in a dark and verdant fantasy world, meant for a single player to enjoy. This game was created to answer the question; how might we design a play experience that utilizes text, and allows for meaningful player choice? The browser-based computer game is designed for players who enjoy fantasy settings or readers interested in adding an element of branching paths to their stories. The branching narrative allows for meaningful choices and consequences, ensuring that each playthrough feels unique and engaging and players can role-play distinct characters each time.
PLAYER CHOICE
Archon’s Decay was designed with the player in mind first and foremost. Throughout interviews with people regarding choice-based narrative games, the most common complaint is that the story always plays out roughly the same way regarding major events. Taking inspiration from tabletop rpgs, this game was designed so that each decision leads to completely unique encounters. Many encounters or storylines can play out entirely differently based on player choices.
This leads to an element of tension, as each decision could spell the end of your character, or conversely, lead to a brand new area. This encourages repeat playthroughs, where the player can experiment with choices and role-play a new character.
