BETON BRUT
MATERIALS
Concrete, rebar
This stool formed from concrete and rebar is an exploration into brutalist furniture design as well as 3D form and shape. Designed to mimic a bare and exposed foundation, this stool was made entirely by hand with no advanced tools used for its construction.
Building Process
The construction process was fairly time-consuming and tiring, as the entire stool was constructed by hand. Using only a vise and brute strength, the rebar was bent into the desired shape and each piece was matched to the dimensions laid out. After mixing the concrete it was poured into the large bucket and the three pieces of rebar were submerged into the base. After setting the rebar at the correct height and ensuring the final product would be level, the stool was left to set and harden over the span of two days. After everything had set, the bucket was cut off in order to reveal the finished stool.
FINAL PRODUCT
The finished project supports my weight with a level seat that remains sturdy and secure. The construction of the stool has held up well in the past years, and it has weathered harsh conditions without a scratch. While not the most comfortable, this stool is built to withstand the test of time.
